WHAT THE ART MEANS

This is the same night sky turned inside out. Instead of a dark wrap, one side holds a round pool of deep midnight blue and indigo, and inside it is the centaur archer at full draw, bow bent and tail streaming, built out of glowing gold particles and indigo nebula gas with the real Sagittarius constellation laid over him in gold. The edge of that pool dissolves into the white ceramic — gas and gold star dust thinning out until there is nothing but the cup. No ring, no border, no dark square. The other side carries the name in deep antique gold: the Sagittarius glyph, a slim divider rule with star finials, SAGITTARIUS in letterspaced gold capitals, and the epithet THE FARTHEST ARROW in small caps beneath it. Most people who find Sagittarius in the sky do not see an archer at all — they see a teapot. Eight stars close into a lopsided pot with a spout, a lid and a handle, and the shape is so easy to pick out that it has its own name: the Teapot. It is drawn here exactly as it sits in the sky — one closed eight-sided ring with nothing at all inside it, which is unusual, because most zodiac star figures are open chains that never close. And the spout points almost exactly at the center of our galaxy: look just past it and you are looking through the thickest part of the Milky Way.
